Robert (Bob) Hussey, 79, a lifelong resident and farmer, passed peacefully and knowing he was loved, on December 2, 2022 in Sanford. Though he was challenged from chronic illnesses, his grit and determination did not keep him away from the farm he loved.
Bob was born at home in Alfred on July 29, 1943, one of nineteen born to Roscoe and Gladys (Adams) Hussey.
Bob was a true Maine farmer who was raised and worked on the farm from a youngster until he moved into assisted living several years ago.
He was happiest in the woods working with his chainsaw deciding which direction to fell a tree or deciding when the precise time to bale the hay. It was a way of life, long hours, milking the cows twice a day, tilling the soil, growing green beans, and raising chickens. Being a farmer is not for the faint of heart. The seasons became Bob’s time clock. Even in the best conditions, “mother nature” is still in charge.
Bob enjoyed riding in his truck with country and western music playing and stopping by to visit with family and friends. Usually, he would share the weather forecast and news within the family.
Bob looked forward to fall and attending the local fair, chatting about the best milking cows or beef cattle. His favorite event was the horse pulling as in his younger years he worked with a team of horses he used in the woods.
Bob possessed the infamous New England dry wit and ingenuity. He would offer advice on how to fix something and one would ponder, “No way that will work but sure enough it would!” All he would do is smile.
He is survived by his siblings: Phyllis Courtois, Roberta Kerrigan, Tom, Sam and Nelson Hussey, Nancy Hussey and herds of nieces and nephews.
Bob has been reunited with his parents, and siblings: Caroline and Mary Hussey, Lucille Main, Pauline Burgess, Laura Ghidoni, and Cora Carlson, Carroll, Sumner, Arthur, Pete, Elwyn and Wilber Hussey and Mabel Stearns.
A calling hour will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2022 from 1 – 2 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Bibber Memorial at Autumn Green, 47 Oak St., in Alfred.
