Obituary for Maurice R. "John" Swett Jr.

Maurice “John” Swett, Jr., 85, passed peacefully at Scarborough Terrance on Tuesday, September 20, 2022.

John had been a resident of Limerick for many years, but always considered Waterboro his home.

John was born at home in Waterboro on December 23, 1936, an early Christmas present for his parents, Frances R. (Brady) and Maurice R. Swett, Sr.

He grew up on the family farm in Waterboro and gained life lessons such as hard work, the day-to-day schedule of caring for the animals and haying the fields each summer.

John was drafted into the US Army and served from 1960 – 1962 and then transferred into the Army Reserves until 1965.

John worked as a supervisor at the mills in Biddeford and retired from Cianbro Construction following 25 years of dedicated service to the company. He took immense pride in helping to built Massabesic High School. If John’s vision had not failed him, he would still be enjoying the home he built on Townhouse Road and still building birdhouse and feeding the very confused seagull that visited daily.

John loved watching the horse racing and Scarborough Downs and visiting Foxwoods and Bangor Slots. Each year he enjoyed going to the local fairs and to Fryeburg Fair to watch Draft horse pulling contest and watching the 4-H groups show their animals. He and his companion, Lorraine Toothaker had many years together,
trying new restaurants and staying at the cottage on Ossipee Lake.

John is survived by his children, Cynthia Swett and David Swett, both of Limerick, ME; his grandchildren: Lauren Swett of Limerick, ME and Tyler Swett and wife Vanessa of Raymond, NH; nephew Doug McPherson and wife Nancy of Rockford, IL; DerryL McPerson and wife Julie of Montville, ME; Dennis Day of Scarborough, ME; niece Dawn Drown of Biddeford, ME and his longtime companion Thelma “Lorraine” Toothaker, of Kittery, ME.

John was predeceased by his parents, Maurice, Sr. and Francis Swett, his sisters Patricia Swett and Virginia Day, brother-in-law Donald Day and a nephew, Dwight McPherson.

A Graveside Service with military honors will be Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Pine Grove South Cemetery, West Rd., in Waterboro.
