Obituary: Margueritte Bernice Illsley Hayes

Margueritte B. Hayes, 94, a longtime resident of Limerick, died peacefully on March 16, 2023 at St. Andre Health Care Facility, Memory Care Unit, in Biddeford, Maine.

Margueritte was born on September 9, 1928 in St. George Parish, Back Bay, New Brunswick to Jennie Leavitt Illsley and Carle L. Illsley.

She graduated from Limerick High School in 1947. On March 29, 1948, Margueritte married David I. Hayes and were married for 71 years.

Margueritte was a dedicated wife, mother, wonderful cook/baker and dairy farmer. She was a hard worker and worked several different part time jobs in addition to taking care of her family and helping on the dairy farm. Her work included school bus driver and private duty CNA.

Margueritte was raised in the Limerick Congregational Church and spent most of her adult life participating in the Ladies Circle/Women’s Fellowship, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School and as a member of the Board of Deacons.

She was fortunate to travel to Puerto Rico for and Extension conference. While a member of the Extension she and Virginia Libby won several ribbons at Acton Fair for the Limerick Extension.

She also took many trips with Maine Line Tours. Her favorite destination was Gettysburg.

Marguerrite is survived by three daughters: Davelyn Hayes of Limerick, Holly Hayes Wyman and husband Dean of Limerick, and Laura Hayes Stone and husband Fred of Arundel. She is survived by three beloved grandchildren: David Stone of Arundel and Jessica Stone Newton and husband Adam of Fairfield. Her sister Madeline Wagner of Auburn also survives her.

She was predeceased by the love of her life, her husband David, a sister Avis Spear and her parents Jennie and Carle Illsley.

Margueritte’s family wishes to express their gratitude to her caregivers at St. Andre and her hospice team, especially her case manager, Melissa, who have made her final days easier.

A celebration Of Margueritte’s life will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Bibber Memorial at Autumn Green, 47 Oak St., in Alfred, Maine.

A private committal service will be held later in the spring.
