Obituary: Lawrence J. Barry, Jr.
Dateline: Lyman, Maine

Lawrence J. Barry, Jr., 91, passed peacefully on April 14, 2023, at Southern Maine Healthcare in Biddeford.

He was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on September 25, 1931, the son of Lawrence J. Barry, Sr., and Ellen M. (Warner) Barry.

Larry grew up in East Boston, Massachusetts, attending Boston schools and graduating from Boston Tech. He was a voracious reader and read every book in the Saugus Public Library! The librarian began getting books from surrounding towns for him to read.

In 1952, Larry enlisted into the United States Air Force and served in Japan and Korea. He served four years and was honorably discharged in February of 1956. Upon his return to his hometown, he worked for the B&M Railroad for a few years. Then began a career in flight operations for American Airlines in Boston. He was proud of his 41 years of dedicated service with American Airlines. He was well respected by his colleagues.

Larry married his sweetheart and soulmate, Patricia J. Gleason on April 6, 1953, and they shared 70 years of memories, joy, and devotion together. He was a devoted father to his daughter Patricia and son Larry, III. They made their home in Saugus, MA where Larry was a longtime member of the VFW Post # 2346 in town. Larry would help anyone “at the drop of a hat” – no matter the time of day or night. He was caring and dependable.

He and Pat traveled extensively with trips to Hawaii and even catching a day trip to Bermuda for dinner with his lovely wife. Each winter they left the cold Northeast behind and enjoyed the warm weather and ocean in Florida.

In 1994, they bought a home by Wadleigh Pond in Lyman, Maine. Sunsets were enjoyed on their boat the “Patty B” and morning coffee tasted better out on the deck in the mornings.

Larry was sincere and thoughtful. He adored his family and grandchildren who called him “Casper” or Gramps.

We will miss his presence and love. He has taken his final flight home into the welcoming arms of God.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia J. Barry of Lyman, ME; daughter Patty Barry Moran and husband Kevin of Georgetown, MA; and son Lawrence J.
