Obituary for John J. "Jack" Smalley Sr.

Obituary: John J. Smalley, Sr.
Dateline: Sanford

John J. Smalley, Sr., 79, a longtime resident of Sanford, passed peacefully surrounded by his loved ones at Maine Medical Center in Portland on April 3, 2023.

John was born in Everett, Massachusetts on July 16, 1943, the son of Bertha S. (Evans) Smalley and George W. Smalley, Sr. As a youngster he was known as Jack.

John was a devoted husband and father. He and his wife of 60 years, Carol (Manning) Smalley welcomed into their hearts and home three children, John Jr., Richard, and Justin.

Jack was a self employed mechanic who loved working on cars, but also enjoyed “tinkering” with just about anything that needed to be fixed. Jack would find a solution and way to serve his customers and friends.

He loved to ride his Harley motorcycle and went to Laconia, NH and Daytona Beach, FL many times. Jack also went to the Wisconsin Harley Davidson factory.

Jack tended to a large vegetable garden each year and put his heart and soul into it. He freely shared his abundance of vegetables with family and friends. Jack was a good man who would lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He loved his family wholeheartedly.

He is survived by his best friend and wife Carol Smalley, his three children: John J. Smalley, Jr., Richard J. Smalley, and Justin J. Smalley, two grandchildren and four siblings: Cookie Browning, Susan Wormstead, Thomas Smalley and Robert Smalley and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, George Smalley, Sr., and Charlie Smalley and two sisters, Linda Smalley and Laurel Smalley.

Per Jack’s wishes, the family will celebrate his life and memory together.
