Obituary for Frank T. Metrolis Jr.

Frank T Metrolis Jr passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 after a brief illness at Benchmark, in Rye, NH. Frank was born May 22, 1934 in Amityville, Long Island. He was the son of the late Frank T Metrolis Sr and Harriet Metrolis and the oldest of 5 siblings.

After graduation from Perry High School in Hamburg, PA in 1952, Frank joined the Air Force. While in the Air Force stationed at Westover AFB in Chicopee, MA, Frank met and married Margaret (Peggy) Harris in 1954. Frank and Peggy later had 4 children. Their Air Force travels took them to McGuire AFB, NJ, Charleston AFB, SC, and Pease AFB, NH. Frank was a flight engineer and part of the aircraft crew for the KC135 Stratotanker and C141 Starlifter from 1956 to 1976. Frank’s travels in the Air Force took him to many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America. Frank was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was stationed at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam in 1968-69. During one of his missions in Vietnam, his C7 Caribou airplane took on enemy fire. Frank and the rest of the aircrew were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for their valor in completing the mission. Frank attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, the highest rank for NCOs in the Air Force. His last military assignment was the Superintendent of Fuels at Pease AFB, NH.

After his retirement from the Air Force in 1982, Frank received a bachelor’s degree from Granite State College in Management. He later worked at the post office in a management position for 20 years and also sold real estate with the McMaster Agency in Portsmouth, NH. His favorite hobbies were playing golf as much as possible and RVing.

Frank is survived by his 3 sisters, Eleanor Snyder of Reading, PA, Harriet Simmons of Shillington, PA, and Anne Mays of Dauberville, PA, 2 sons, Barry Metrolis of Denton, TX, and Marc Metrolis of Carrollton, TX, a daughter Roxanne Metrolis of Brentwood, NH, and daughter in law Mary Metrolis of Denton, TX. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren, Brad Metrolis of Bothell, WA, Craig Metrolis of Aubrey, TX, Jason Metrolis of La Jolla, CA, Sophie Metrolis of Katy, TX, Zachary Holmes of Brentwood, NH, and Alexandria Holmes of Brentwood, NH and 6 great grandchildren. Frank was pre-deceased by his wife, Peggy in 1998, his brother Chuck Metrolis in 2013, and a son, Kevin Metrolis of Albuquerque, NM in 2019.

Frank was a member of the Middle Street Baptist Church for many years.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH.
